Assignment Three: Searching

 

1. A patron wants to find books about small business and e-commerce. a) Suggest an appropriate keyword search in the University of Denver library catalog. b) What is the controlled vocabulary term for e-commerce (i.e., the Library of Congress Subject Heading - LCSH)? c) What is the best subject heading for small business? d) Would you recommend that your patron use this heading in the search, or just use the term as a general keyword?

 

2. Another patron wants scholarly journal articles on watersheds in Colorado or New Mexico. Suggest an appropriate search for the user in Academic Search Complete. [just give me the search syntax.]

 

3. A patron is looking for library literature on the implementation of online catalogs in academic libraries or public libraries in Japan, China, and Korea.

Show the search string you recommend the patron use to find articles on this topic. [not particular database, just give me the search syntax]

 

4. A patron is looking for information (books and journal articles) on poisonous snakes in the Rocky Mountain states. a) suggest some appropriate databases; b) suggest some search strategies (i.e., suggest specific search strings for the user to try). You will need to test them in the databases to see if they are successful.

5. ProQuest Congressional contains a section that has full text of congressional hearings. One way of retrieving hearings is by "HEARING-ID". The hearing Department of Defense Ammunition Requirements and Production Base has two parts (the Superintendent of Documents number is Y4.Ar5/3:S.hrg.99-414). Put together a search string that retrieves both of these two parts by their HEARING-ID number.
