Built For
Comfort
has risen quickly in the ranks as one of Denver's most promising
new bands. They are known for their enthusiastic live performances,
eclectic set lists, and offbeat sense of humor. It is composed
of four members who enjoy each other's company on and off the
stage. Their fun and enthusiasm is shared by audiences, who groove
on the energy of the band. Their diverse song list, while predominantly
composed of blues material, includes jazz, rock, country, and
funk. This combination both exploits the talents of the band's
members and appeals to a wide variety of tastes. While the group
as it exists has only been around since October of 1996, its origins
go back a few years.
In June of 1995, Jeff
Froyd and Chris
Morley, psychology doctoral
candidates,
got together to play a few songs at a party for their school.
Jeff's experience touring with such acts as Del Fuegos
and Young Weasels grounded the pair, while Chris' throaty
singing style and propensity for lousy relationships pushed them
in the direction of playing blues. The pair soon started playing
gigs at coffeehouses. A year later, a bass guitar student of Jeff's,
Doug
Palmer,
joined and the three formed a blues trio. Doug, an accomplished
musician, actor, and carnival clown, added another dimension (several,
in fact) to the band. Joke
Time with Doug has since become
one of the most dreaded and feared elements of their performances.
Together, the three became Built
For Comfort, played several small
venues, and began to be known around Denver as a well-schooled
blues band.
By September of 1996, the three were enjoying
great success and were playing larger venues. They decided they
needed to hire a drummer. They initiated a nationwide search,
advertising on television and radio, as well as in newspapers
across the country, and found Paul
Christophersen. The drummer's 20
years of experience with several bands around the country, including
The Howlers, Armchair Martian, and the NuTones,
helped the band find the groove it was looking for. Says the drummer,
"When I found these
guys I was showering at a friend's house."
After adding Paul, the band was so well-received, they became
the house band at the Tivoli Brew Pub, and a favorite at several
other venues. As their success continues to grow and the four look to the future, they are expanding their generous repertoire with original material. |
