CHANGING USE PATTERNS IN ACADEMIC
LIBRARIES: THE CASE OF CHEMISTRY JOURNALS
Abstract
Academic
libraries have been undergoing a tremendous amount of change over the past 10
years. The greatest amount of change has occurred with the acquisition and
management of Web-based journals. Scientific journals have been migrating to
the Web in great numbers. Both commercial and non-profit society publishers
have been at the forefront of this transition. During this transition, the
librarians at the Penrose Library of the

From
looking at the print and electronic use data, one can see that our patrons use
electronic journals much more often than print journals.
The
citation data shows that noncommercial journals are cited much more often than
the more expensive commercial journals.
Nine noncommercial journals received more than 50 citations in a 7.5
year span. They were: Biochemistry,
Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of the
American Chemical Society, Journal of Chemical Physics, Journal of Biological
Chemistry, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Environmental Science &
Technology, Inorganic Chemistry
The three
main cited commercial journals are Nature,
Chemical Physics Letters, and the Journal of Molecular Biology.
