Penrose Newsletter to NSME Faculty
April 2003

The Penrose Library has quite a number of things that we would like to announce to the Science and Engineering faculty here at DU.

Nature and Science are Now Available Site-wide

We recently started site-wide electronic subscriptions to these two major journals. To access from off-campus, please use the Peak records for Nature and Science.

Institute of Physics (IoP) Journals

http://0-www.iop.org.bianca.penlib.du.edu/EJ

The British IoP publishes some of the most highly-respected journals in physics. The publisher provides DU patrons site-wide electronic access to the most recent couple of years to all of their journals. Since we currently subscribe to three of their journals in print (Journal of Physics A, B, and D), we can access those three journals back to 1993.

Here are the titles:

  • Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General (access to issues published since 1993)
  • Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (access to issues published since 1993)
  • Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter *
  • Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics (access to issues published since 1993)
  • Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics *
  • Classical and Quantum Gravity *
  • Combustion Theory and Modelling *
  • European Journal of Physics *
  • Inverse Problems *
  • Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering *
  • Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied Optics *
  • Journal of Optics B: Quantum and Semiclassical Optics *
  • Measurement Science and Technology *
  • Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering *
  • Nanotechnology *
  • Network: Computation in Neural Systems *
  • Nonlinearity *
  • Physics Education *
  • Physics in Medicine and Biology *
  • Physiological Measurement *
  • Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion *
  • Plasma Sources Science and Technology *
  • Reports on Progress in Physics *
  • Semiconductor Science and Technology *
  • Smart Materials and Structures *
  • Superconductor Science and Technology *
  • Waves in Random Media *
(* access to issues published since 2001)

American Institute of Physics (AIP) Journal Backfiles

The AIP has digitized many of their journals back to 1975, and we can now access the back issues for five AIP journals. They are: Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Chemical Physics, Journal of Mathematical Physics, and the Review of Scientific Instruments.

American Chemical Society (ACS) Journal Backfiles

http://0-pubs.acs.org.bianca.penlib.du.edu/journals/query/subscriberSearch.jsp

The ACS Journal Archives was awarded the 2002 "Best Internet-Based Electronic Product in Mathematics/Science" from the AAP's Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division. The Archive gives you immediate access to nearly 3 million pages of original chemistry, and full text searching of all titles and all years — from 1879 to current ACS Web Editions subscription. We have full text access to most of their journals. (The full text of the Chemical & Engineering News is not included in our package.)

Web of Science Trial

We will be running a trial of the Web of Science in May. Be on the lookout for more details at a later date.

Journal Sticker Shock

Many academic libraries have recently demonstrated to their faculty the high cost of science journal subscriptions. For example, Brown University put red tags near all of their journals that cost over $1,000. "Prepare for sticker shock if you're headed for the journal shelves in the Science Library. Dangling red tags are marking periodicals that have one-year subscription rates of $1,000 or higher. Some rates, such as the $19,396 for Nuclear Physics A & B, match the cost of a new midsize car. Relatively lower rates, such as $4,159.13 for Neuroscience Letters, still take your breath away."

Other virtual library exhibits include:

Biological Abstracts

http://0-search.epnet.com.bianca.penlib.du.edu/

We changed our vendor for Biological Abstracts, the leading abstracting and indexing service for life science information. Provides references derived from thousands of life science research journals. Once you get to the EBSCO Select Service page, click on "Biological Abstracts (1997 to present)."
