The Penrose Library has quite a number of things that we would like to announce to the Science and Engineering faculty here at DU. Penrose Newsletter to NSME Faculty
May 2001ISI Proceedings database
We have one free full year of access to this database. Free access will end as of March of 2002. It is a good place to get abstracts of conference reports from the IEEE.

INSPEC is loaded
We now have the INSPEC database loaded onto terminal #10, 1989-Present. It is good for finding information on a variety of scientific topics. INSPEC is the leading English-language bibliographic information service providing access to the world's scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing, and information technology. Here are some results on different topics such as:remote sensing - 26,310 hits (EPR or electron paramagnetic resonance) - 8,823 hits parallel processing - 20,966 hits Statistics from ACS journals
We recently received usage statistics for the first three months of our ACS full text access contract. In short, over 600 articles were downloaded! The full report can be found here - http://silas.penlib.du.edu/NSME/acsjuse-01.html
ACS Full Text Journals - Information retrieved Registered IP Address Abstracts Full Articles (HTML) Full Articles (PDF) Searches performed Total 130.253.*.* 59 84 617 106 866 PASCAL Update
Most of you by now have already heard of the PASCAL storage facility that is at the old Fitzsimons Army Base. This news announcement and Power Point Presentation gives some backgound. (http://www.penlib.du.edu/penrose_library_and_pascal.html and http://www.uchsc.edu/library/PASCAL/PASCALpresentation.htm)PASCAL is for storage of low-use items. The definition of a low use item is a tricky one. What one department may call low use is different from what another department would consider low use. Right now, we are starting to identify those items that have not been checked out in a very long time, since atleast 1983. We regard those titles as candidates for transfer to storage. Library staff are inserting a pink slip into each of these volumes to identify them. If anyone has a reason for thinking the volume should remain in the active collections in the Penrose Library building, she or he should indicate the reason and sign the form, returning it to the ciculation desk.
Researchers in many of the NSME departments have a history of needing materials from a longer range of time as compared to other fields. Some areas of the stacks have old books and low use, such as books on surgery. (The following might be a good candidate - Keith, Arthur, Menders of the Maimed : the Anatomical & Physiological Principles Underlying the Treatment of Injuries to Muscles, Nerves, Bones & Joints, London, Oxford University Press, 1919.) I plan on working with the faculty in all of NSME to identify the truly low use materials.
E-mail a reference question form
We have always received reference questions directly via email, but sometimes, we could not answer promptly because we were away for a conference or on vacation. We now we have a standardized form that is sent to all of the reference librarians. This will ensure that the person gets a prompt response. Please let your students know that this is now available.
