Library, Senate House
To search the online catalogue, follow the links from the University of London home page.
Senate House is an academic library and procedures for using it are similar to the academic libraries in the US.
The online library catalog is the III system, the same used in Penrose Library, so you should be familiar with search techniques to find materials. For pre-1980 materials, you may need to use the card catalog as well.
Most of the materials are in the open stacks, but if an item requires retrieval the online catalog will indicate this by the phrase 'Closed Stack.' For example, most of the art history periodicals are in the Closed Stack PR Collection, while most of the English Studies periodicals are in the open stacks on the 5th floor. The Bliss classification system is used for the circulating books and Dewey is used for the reference collection.
A wide variety of online indexes and reference tools are available on the computers in the reference room, and a list of databases and web resources listed on their website <www.ull.ac.uk/guides/databases/elecdatab1.html>.
