Herman Schweizer was known as "the Harvey anthropologist". He headed the Companys Indian Department from its creation in 1902 until his death in 1942. Located in Albuquerque, the Indian Department assembled collections of Indian arts and crafts items and either shipped them to the "curior room" in the Harvey Companys Alvarado Hotel or sold them to museums such as the Carnegie, Field, and Berlin Volkerkunde. The items were not just from the Southwest; they were from tribes all over the West. However, Schweizer was known for travelling extensively in the Southwest and supervising the purchase of many of the items personally. He is known to have frequented the Hopi villages and was a supporter of the Santa Fe-based Indian Arts fund (Harvey 1963:40-42).
