Course Information

This special topics course will cover the concepts, theory, mathematics, and culture of poker. Students will learn the basic principles and strategies needed to master the intricacies of the game and apply these skills to many of the popular forms of poker, including Texas Hold‘em, Seven-Card Stud, Five-Card Stud, Five-Card Draw, and Omaha Hold'em. Topics include the history and language of poker, the role of chance and skill, probability, pot odds, expected value, variance, effective odds, implied odds, reverse implied odds, deception, bluffing, game theory, earning rate, bankroll analysis, computer simulations, and strategy differences among home, casino, low-limit, high-limit, and tournament games.

Prerequisite: An introductory course in statistics or permission of instructor.
