On the subject of Fauth/Saegmuller, you will wish to know that they are one
and the same. Fauth & Co. was founded in 1874, by George N. Saegmuller, Camill
Fauth and Dean Lockwood. Saegmuller and Lockwood both had jobs with the U. S.
Govt. Saegmuller was, in fact, principal mechanician for the Coast Survey, so
his being a principal in a firm which came to be a major supplier to the Coast
Survey was a bit cozy. In fact he was rudely fired from the USC&GS some years
later---but that's another story!

As you know, I'm working on all this for an article, but by 1888 Saegmuller
had bought out his brother in law, who returned to Germany about that time.
What your telescope seems to confirm is that S. made telescope mountings under
his own name, but, recognizing that the Fauth name was too well known and well
respected in the geodetic field (and for smaller astronomical instruments as
well) to tinker with, he kept it until he moved the company to Rochester in
1905 and created a parallel company with Bausch & Lomb. (Bausch, Lomb,
Saegmuller, from 1905 to 1908.)
