Supplement 1 to the Federal Depository Library Manual

September 1994

GP 3.29:D 44/993/SUPP.

Depository Library Directory

BDLD version of the: Federal Depository Library Directory [GP 3.36:L 61] which lists depositories in the U.S. and its territories.

The BDLD version also contains the following for each depository library:

    1. Number of items selected, and,
    2. Selection percentage.

Access to entries by depository library number, state, and city.

Largely based on the February 4, 1999 edition of GPO's Profiles Database
February 11, 1998;

Depository Library Program Laws (44 USC 19)

From the U.S. Code Online via GPO Access - May 24, 1996

Depository Shipping Lists

HTML versions of GPO's shipping lists in DBase format. Lists are in four series: Electronic, Microfiche, Paper, & Separates. While the BDLD shipping lists are created from GPO-created electronic files, GPO/LPS prohibits their use for claiming.

Beginning with shipping lists issued on October 5, 1998, files of shipping list data in csv (comma separated values) format are created each day the BDLD shipping list pages are updated. These files are more suitable than GPO's DBase files for building a local database of depository materials listed on shipping lists.

Introduction:

This collection of basic Federal Depository Library Program documents grew out of an experiment to see how easy/difficult it would be to write a suite of computer programs that would be able to quickly convert the almost 900,000 byte ASCII delimited file of the List of Classes into readable HTML files. The ability to use the frequent updates of the List of Classes file on the Government Printing Office's Federal Bulletin Board required a more or less automatic way of converting the file if it were to be kept current and useful.

As the experiment proved successful, it was decided to use the same tools (plus manual coding) to convert the other management documents of the Depository Library Program that were available in machine readable form. These titles are listed below:

Each file brought its own challenges for coding into HTML. The text files made available by GPO on the Bulletin Board were in no uniform format. In many instances parts of the original document were not represented at all in GPO's electronic version.

In obvious cases, typographical errors were corrected and text was re-entered in the HTML edition to make it comparable to the print edition.. Decorative illustrations and replication of the indexes to the paper editions have been omitted. To speed loading by web browsers, graphics (other than tables) have been keep to a minimum and file sizes have been kept relatively small. Because of the use of tables, a browser with this capability is needed to read these documents. At the present time only the series of files making up the experimental Union List of Item Selections: Colorado requires the use of a browser which supports HTML frames.

Creation of HTML editions of the List of Classes and the Inactive List from available machine readable copy was problematic because of the great difference between the source files and the printed versions.

These documents are made avilable on the World Wide Web as a service to the Depository Library community. If you link to this page or to any of the document pages associated with this collection please give credit in the following way: (Tyler/BDLD: Univ. of Denver).

You are encouraged to look at this site in the future to see if the next phase of the experiment - updating the List of Classes and the Inactive List from information provided in Administrative Notes and other sources - is successful (or possible).
