It seems like every week I get a call from someone wanting to located graves in cemeteries
This can be a huge problem both in well marked cemeteries
And older, less well tended cemeteries, where records have been lost and markers
moved or destroyed.
Where caskets are still present the graves are very visible as distinct
reflection hyperbolas.
When no caskets were used, and remains have disintegrated, often the only
clue to the graves are the vertical shafts, which contain different materials
than the surround, undisturbed soils.
Profiles are processed in the same way as other GPR studies, and the graves become visible spatially.
This is a study done on a 19th century Mormon cemetery in Utah
And a historic cemetery from Superior Colorado:
One of the more interesting studies was locating a cemetery of African slaves in Key West Florida. They were shipwrecked on the island just before the Civil War, and many died of disease. These poor souls were known to have been buried near the beach, but their exact location was in question. Since this area was scheduled for development, their descendents were anxious to know the location of the cemetery. This study was funded by the Mel Fisher Museum.
Data collection was very difficult! In fact, this was
the toughest conditions we have encountered anywhere in the world!
We had to worry about volley ball games getting in our way, getting too
sunburned, and being handed too many tropical drinks by the local beach bums!
But the data were great, and the graves were located in
profiles, sitting directly on the local "hardpan", which was as far as the grave
diggers usually excavated..
In map view, they can be seen in orderly rows, just south of
the sidewalk.
Here is an article I wrote in Historical Archaeology on this subject. Click here for a pdf file of it.
