By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Track the emergence of digital media studies from the early history of critical theory, social sciences, literary studies, cultural studies, and media studies to recent trends in the field
- Understand theoretical frameworks that have guided understandings of digial media
- Synthesize your own theoretical framework as a way to position critical discussions in a variety of mediated formats (oral presentation, online forums and blogs, the formal essay, hypertext)
- Conduct independent research in digital media studies
- Participate in an intercultural digitally mediated encounter and evaluate its potential and shortcomings
- Use the networked computer's ability to share resources and concepts and so foster a collaborative intellectual environment
- Present and distribute your original written work in an appropriate media format
- Critically reflect on the technical, theoretical, cultural, and personal dimensions of your own writing
The Workload section shows how you will demonstrate your accomplishment of these projected outcomes. The Policies section indicates how I'll measure your fulfillment of assignment expectations.
Assessment of outcomes:
You will be asked to write several reflection papers during this course that will help you to evaluate your own development as a scholar and producer in digital media. These reflection papers will occur in conjunction with the participatory and collaborative Intercultural Communication assignment, the written part of the final assignment, and in the form of a final reflection on the class and your own experience in self-expression.
